Remember your favourite wedges? You know the ones Remember your favourite wedges? You know the ones you used to have a magic short game with. Plenty of us remember the Ram @tomwatson.pga range. Available in different grinds/bounces and finishes (chrome/Beryllium/Cobalt and later nickel these babies were ahead of their time. The thing we personally forgot about was the amount of offset or gooseneck. Pushing the leading edge a little further back can delay contact - unreal for those nippy shots loaded with spin. We can make new wedges play a little closer to the old classics. These wedges definitely made me play shots with the handle forward, maybe why I struggle to get comfortable with modern wedges. A change up in irons since we last met, Steve is now gaming @srixoneurope ZXI7 irons and adding a new ProV1X+ ball for some additional spin they are coming out on a softer flight compared to the original ProV1X for more control, especially from semi rough. 5-P were perfect hitting good apex and proximity numbers, 4i was coming out a little low so we’ve kindly asked Srixon for a Zx5 4i match to iron spec and a ZXu 4 with Ventus 10X to match the game 3 utility to increase apex. So, irons were great with the spinny ball but this threw up another issue - too much spin on the driver. Steve’s used a Titleist GT3 10 degree for some time and although it’s producing amazing accuracy we could see the opportunity to steal a few free yards by dialling the adaptor. Simple change here moving adaptor from B2 -C2 reduced spin rate by 2-300rpm and beginning to hit the window we wanted on centre strike and 3-400 on a lower heel strike. Average carry gain of 7-8 yards and a more workable flight into any wind. Changing ball is a tricky one and often presents unforeseen issues in other areas of your bag. After a wedge shaft weight change up during the off season @nippon modus 125gm-115 wedge- 120 8iron just a marginal tweak to lie angle and distances were dialled. The boys on the truck @srixoneurope have done a hell of a job. ZXI 7/5 comb Irons had taken a pounding by the baggage handlers after recent trips to South Africa and India and needed some loft and lie love to get the gaps back to normal and hit the launch windows required. Woods were very close need the 7wood to start a degree lower from start position as we saw some negative changes in strike as we reduced loft in an attempt to reduce spin. (more upright not good for Alfie) 4 wood was so perfect and the Chief is now a low spin dart throwing machine!
